Horia Bernea’s painting “Slogan (Production Chart)” demonstrates his complex engagement with the visual language of late-socialist Romania. This painting belongs to a group of works produced at the end of the 1960s that appropriate the forms of bureaucratic communication, statistical diagrams, and propaganda imagery. Its composition resembles a factory productivity board or planning chart. Vertical white bars rise against a dominant red ground that contrasts with blocks of yellow and green. The overall image evokes the visual environment of socialist modernization, where graphs, slogans, and production statistics functioned as symbols of progress and ideological achievement. Bernea does not present these elements as transparent information, however, instead transforming them into painterly signs. The chart thus ceases to communicate data and becomes an autonomous visual structure. By way of this displacement, the artist exposes the gap between official representation and lived reality. W.S.
